Looking back
11 September 2006
I haven’t ever written about 9/11. There’s so much there that I just couldn’t ever fit it into words, but I need to at least get this out. The split between our immediate and long-term reactions has been so huge that it’s difficult to comprehend. This event profoundly affected my chosen career, launched a war on an idea, and divided a nation. To those who have been directly involved: I’m sorry. There’s nothing else to say.
As Ze Frank so eloquently points out, for several months we were truly united. That was lost somewhere along the lines, and along with some of our freedoms was replaced by patriotic bumper stickers and jingoism and hatred. Five years later, I think it’s still too soon. Too soon for made-for-TV movies; too soon for political manipulation; too soon for anything more than I’ve written already.
