Rectangular course
Lesson plan revised 26 November 2006; private pilot maneuvers.
Objective
The student will gain a working knowledge of wind correction techniques and the procedures for correctly performing the maneuver, improving understanding of the traffic pattern and entry.
Elements
- wind correction techniques
- relationship to traffic pattern
- choosing ground reference
- radius
- emergency landing options
Execution
- setup at a suitable altitude (600 ft – 1,000 ft agl)
- one by two mile rectangle
- pattern flown 1/3 to 1/4 mile outside
- 45° downwind entry
- configure: boost on, fullest tank, gear up, mixture rich, prop 2400, 100 knots (±10 knots)
- ground track
- constant-radius corners
- timing entry and rollout
- turning through to wind correction angle
- constant altitude (±100 ft)
- importance of maintaining coordination
- wind drift and prevention

Instructor actions
Explain the reasoning behind, and appropriate execution of, a rectangular course using guided discussion. Illustrate various scenarios using the whiteboard and model aircraft.
Student actions
Arrive for the briefing prepared, having read and completed the assigned homework, and actively participate in the guided discussion.
Completion standards
The student should be able to explain and demonstrate the setup and execution of a rectangular course, understanding how to choose an appropriate reference, MDA, and pattern entry.
